DT Mission Statement
In the kingfisher partnership, we believe Design and Technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems, within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. In the Kingfisher partnership, children are taught to select and use appropriate tools safely and effectively to make a product. In all areas of Design and Technology the children are encouraged to consider the effectiveness of their designs and requirements of the product. Every child will have the opportunity to learn and extend their understanding, experience and application in the use of technology, including I.C.T, in as wide a variety of situations as possible

Curriculum
In KS1 the children begin to focus on preparing fruit and vegetables. They will be examining a range of fruit/vegetables, discussing basic food hygiene practices. They will be designing appealing products and communicating ideas through talking and drawings. They will learn how to use simple utensils, peeling, cutting and grating etc, and tasting and evaluating their finished products, using technical and sensory vocab relevant to the product. They will also look at textiles, learning how to make templates and learn new joining techniques. They will begin by designing a functional and appealing product for a chosen user and purpose based on simple design criteria. Generate, develop, model and communicate their ideas as appropriate through talking, drawing, templates, mock-ups and information and communication technology. They will then select from and use a range of tools and equipment to perform practical tasks such as marking out, cutting, joining and finishing. Understanding how to join fabrics using different techniques e.g. running stitch, glue, over stitch, stapling. Explore different finishing techniques e.g. using painting, fabric crayons, stitching, sequins, buttons and ribbons, and know and use technical vocabulary relevant to the project.
In Lower Key Stage 2, children will begin by focusing on 2-D to 3-D textiles. They will generate realistic ideas through discussion and design criteria for an appealing, functional product fit for purpose and specific user/s. Produce annotated sketches, prototypes, final product sketches and pattern pieces. Plan the main stages of making and using a range of appropriate tools with some accuracy e.g. cutting, joining and finishing. They will be selecting fabrics and fastenings according to their functional characteristics e.g. strength, and aesthetic qualities e.g. pattern. Testing their product against the original design criteria and with the intended user. Lower Key stage 2 will also look at Food, creating food from a healthy balanced diet. This will encourage children to clarify ideas through discussion with peers and adults to develop design criteria including appearance, taste, texture and aroma for an appealing product for a particular user and purpose. They will look at the planning aspect, looking at the main stages of a recipe, listing ingredients, utensils and equipment. Selecting and using appropriate utensils and equipment to prepare and combine ingredients. Lower Key stage 2 will also begin exploring the world of Electrical Systems, looking at simple switches and circuits. They will learn how to make manually controlled, simple series circuits with batteries and how to use different types of switches, bulbs and buzzers. Discussing which of the components in the circuit are input devices e.g. switches, and which are output devices e.g. bulbs and buzzers. They will evaluate the ongoing work and the final product with reference to the design criteria and the views of others.
Children in Upper Key Stage 2, will be combining different fabric shapes. They will begin by developing, modelling and communicating ideas through talking, drawing, templates, mock-ups and prototypes and, where appropriate, computer-aided design. They will be formulating step-by-step plans and allocating tasks within a team. They will Investigate and analyse textile products linked to their final product, comparing the final product to the original design specification. In food, Upper Key Stage 2 will be learning to celebrate culture and seasonality. Children use first hand and secondary sources to carry out relevant research into existing products to include personal/cultural preferences, ensuring a healthy diet, meeting dietary needs and the availability of locally sourced/seasonal/organic ingredients. They will demonstrate how to measure out, cut, shape and combine e.g. knead, beat, rub and mix ingredients. Children will ask questions about which ingredients could be changed or added in a basic recipe such as types of flour, seeds, garlic, vegetables. Consider texture, taste, appearance and smell. Upper Key stage 2 will also continue their learning into Electrical systems and complex switches, where they will draw on their scientific understanding, by exploring a range of electrical systems that could be used to control their products.
